Artist:

Wang Luyan

Wang Luyan is one of the important participants in the history of contemporary Chinese art. He participated in important domestic and international exhibitions such as "Star Exhibition" in 1979 and "Chinese Modern Art Exhibition" in 1989. In 1988, Wang Luyan collaborated with Gu Dexin to create the conceptual "Tactile Art" that was devoid of sensory experience. From 1988 to 1995, he worked with Gu Dexin and Chen Shaoping to form the "New Scale Group," whose goal was to eliminate the individuality of artists. Wang Luyan's personal artistic creations center around paradox, believing that only paradox is the true question that denies any answers, and his thinking will not end with answers. His paradoxical representative works include "The Saw Being Sawed," "Saw and Soft Body," "W Bicycle," "W Syringe," "W Bidirectional Weapon," "Walkers," and "Facers and Backers,"etc.

Wang Youshen, the artist, has participated in numerous important biennials and institutional exhibitions both domestically and internationally, including exhibitions of great significance in the history of Chinese contemporary art, such as "Chinese Modern Art Exhibition," "New Generation Art Exhibition," "Venice Biennale," "São Paulo Biennial," "Taipei Biennial," "Guangzhou Triennial," and "Shanghai Biennial," etc. He is one of the important participants and witnesses of Chinese contemporary art. At the same time, Wang Youshen worked at “Beijing Youth Daily” for 30 years from 1988 to 2018, holding positions such as art editor and art director, and he has always maintained dual identities, working in both the art world and the media world, and dedicated to examining and loosening the rigid boundaries between art/life, creation/daily life.

Graduated from Sichuan Fine Arts Institute in 2013; In 2018, Liu Zhan, who left UNMASK group independently in 2011, explored a new artistic direction as an individual and created a series of installations based on research, including videos, prints, found objects, and sculptures. The artist focuses on the spatial and historical dimensions of the site and the diversity and experimental nature of expression, allowing the multi-layered thinking to permeate both the space and the outside world, to some extent expanding the boundaries of people's experiences.

The exhibition title will be named after the participating artists during the exhibition period: "Wang Luyan, Wang Youshen, Zhao Liang, Liu Zhan Art Museum"

The exhibition was postponed from its original 2021 opening due to unforeseen circumstances and will now take place in 2024. During this time, participating artists Wang Luyan, Wang Youshen, Zhao Liang, and Liu Zhan held three discussion sessions about the group exhibition, and they believe that these sessions are an integral part of the exhibition. They collectively chose a group exhibition without a curator, and the question of how artists think, create, and realize their works in such an exhibition was the subject of their discussions. They are artists of different generations, with different artistic values and creative methodologies. What brought them together? What are their similarities and differences in their understanding of art and exhibitions? What problems will they face without a curator, and how will they address them? These questions all require specific observation and analysis of the exhibition.
